I come to this work as a non-Catholic. I've listened to Timothy Gallagher on YouTube. He has a whole series on the work of St Ignatius. I wish that I had exposure to these rules of spiritual discernment of spirits. It would have made my experience with the Spiritual Path more clear and less flying by the seat of my pants and my heart for grace. Gallagher beings these early yet contemporary teaching on spiritual discernment into contemporary language. But more importantly, he brings to them a clarity of purpose and knowledge of one who is clearly doing his work and staying live to the subject. I especially like the Reader's guide, which I usually dislike in many writings. This has the power to underscore what needs to be underscored and applied as you actually live, not as you want to be seen by the teacher. About a year ago, I was in a dark place and sought spiritual counseling from my pastor. He listened to me and near the end of the session, walked to his bookcase and retreived this book, making the recommendation that I read it. It was a helpful recommendation he made to me and I pass along to anyone reading this review!First off, the book was tough. Written at a level that I was not at or had a hard time getting to based on my issues. Read it twice just to be able to try & comprehend. Not a knock on the book but a fair heads up to future readers.Fr. Gallagher is an expert in St. Ignatius and his spirituality. The basis for many popular retreats, this Ignatian way is meant to aid in hearing the will of God in the midst of life and in the face of temptation from the evil one. This spiritual way was comforting in my state of dryness and helped me to see a path forward, one that did not involve drastic changes to my life during this rough spot, but rather a plan to "double down" on the faith I had.Having read this twice, I now come back to it as a reference on specific items for the 14 points of Igantian spirituality, and use this book as a roadmap to implement a particular step in my journey.I am so grateful this was recommended to me and I humbly recommend it myself!
